What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in photos by cameras and smartphones. It can include GPS coordinates, device model and serial number, date and time taken, camera settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed), software used and copyright information.
Why should I remove EXIF before sharing?
Photos taken on smartphones contain precise GPS coordinates that can reveal your home address, workplace or daily routine. Posting images with EXIF intact on social media, forums or job applications is a common privacy risk.
How does the metadata get removed?
The tool decodes your image into a canvas element and re-exports it. The Canvas API produces a clean image with no embedded metadata — it is impossible for EXIF to survive this process.
Will the image quality change?
Very slightly. Re-encoding to JPEG at 95% quality is visually lossless for most purposes. For pixel-perfect lossless removal, export as PNG (no quality loss at all).
Is my photo sent to a server?
No. Everything happens inside your browser. Your photo never leaves your device.
